Construction and use of a dialysis chamber for investigating in situ the toxicity of heavy metals on bacteria. ArchiMer
Tan, T.
Teflon dialysis sampling chambers have been employed to study the toxicity of ZnCl sub(2) on a cadmium-sensitive bacterium, Acinetobacter) CS 13, in an aquarium with running seawater. A concentration of 10 mg Zn super(++) l super(-1) did not influence the cell densities in the chambers, but cell densities decreased at zinc concentrations of 15 and 20 mg l super(-1). In seawater with 20 mg Zn super(++) lu-1 the bacteria accumulated zinc from 827 to 2813 mu g g super(-1) cells dry wt after 1 d. After 2 d the zinc concentration increased to 4625 mu g g super(-1) dry wt. Three chambers were filled with Acinetobacter CS 13 cells added to sterile sediment at a concentration of 1 x 10 super(8) cells ml super(-1) wet sediment. To test the security, these chambers...

ArchiMer
Campillo, Albert.
The growth of post-larval P. serratus has been studied until the appearance of secondary sexual characters, in order to eliminate the influence of sex ratio on the mean wt. The influence of temp on intermolt period and number of molts was observed in male and female kept individually. Different sorts of food of natural origin have been tested. The rearing of post-larval lots metamorphosed at different times of the yr showed that the growth of P. serratus is conditioned not only by the temp, but also by the season. The food conversion ratio was defined in relation to the sex and age of the prawns. Shelters allowed the author to obtain a ratio of survival which varied post-larvae per square meter. The sex ratio established from several breedings as soon as...

Growth factors in Penaeid shrimp feeding ArchiMer
Guillaume, Julien; Cruz, R; Cuzon, Gerard; Wormhoudt Van, A; Revol, A.
Some nutrients known as non essential in vertebrates could be essential in invertebrates and could be related to some "unknown growth factors" which were evidenced or suspected, mainly in mollusc or crustacean flesh or meal, by several authors working on different species of crustaceans. A set of experiments was carried out in our laboratory in order to isolate one of these factors found in squid meal.

Campillo, Albert; Luquet, P..
The quantitiative requirements for protein have been determined in P. serratus reared from the post-larval stage to the 4th month. It appears that the apparent optimum percentage of protein in the diet is a minimum of 60%. At the 8th month, the mean wt of prawn reared with the best artificial diet (diet IV) is only 49% of the wt of shrimp reared with the digestive gland of Patella as a diet. The prawns reared to 4th month on a low-protein diet then reared on a natural diet until the 8th month, show important compensatory growth. However, the prawns do not achieve the wt of the control population, their average wt representing only 16% of the controls.

ArchiMer
Robert, Rene.
Marine unicellular algae growth rates were studied with: a Coulter Counter in conjunction with a channelizer, and a hemacytometer. Compared to the hemacytometer a good precision of the culture density was observed when the Coulter Counter was used in conjunction with a channelizer. Nevertheless care had to be taken when determining the growth of the diatoms.

Varelasantibanez, C.
The reproducers are kept in the laboratory throughout the year and the egg-carrying capsules can be stimulated during this entire period. The capsules are then transferred to the natural environment where hatching takes place. Moreover, juveniles taken in the natural environment can be farmed in suspended systems, at sea, where their growth is faster than in a controlled environment.

ArchiMer
The efficiency of different methods for the purification and maintenance of axenic cultures of a rotifer and an unicellular alga is tested. The use of antibiotics seems to be the most suitable method to realize bacteria-free cultures of plankton. No elements prove that the presence of bacteria is necessary for the development of the cultures. Bacteria-free cultures show a physiological evolution of the culture medium is enriched with some nutrients.
